Comparing Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan Types
Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans help cover costs that Original Medicare doesn’t — such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and standardized by the federal government, which means each plan type offers the same benefits, no matter which company provides it.
Standardized Plans: A–N
Each Medigap plan is labeled with a letter (Plan A through Plan N), and each lettered plan provides a different set of benefits. Not all plans are available in every state, and some are only available to beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
Here is a brief overview of the most common plan types:
Plan Type | Coverage Highlights |
|---|---|
Plan A | Basic benefits – covers Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, and Part B coinsurance. |
Plan B | Includes all of Plan A, plus coverage for Part A deductible. |
Plan C | Offers more comprehensive coverage, including Part B deductible (only available to those eligible before Jan. 1, 2020). |
Plan D | Similar to Plan C, but does not cover the Part B deductible. |
Plan F | Most comprehensive (includes Part B deductible); available only to those eligible before Jan. 1, 2020. |
Plan G | Covers everything Plan F does except the Part B deductible. Popular among new Medicare enrollees. |
Plan K | Offers partial coverage at a lower premium, with an annual out-of-pocket limit. |
Plan L | Higher coverage than Plan K, with its own out-of-pocket limit. |
Plan M | Covers 50% of the Part A deductible; does not cover Part B deductible. |
Plan N | Lower premiums, with small copays for office visits and ER visits; does not cover Part B deductible. |
Note: Plans C and F are only available if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
Choose the Right Coverage for You
Each Medigap plan offers different levels of coverage to suit various needs and budgets. While premiums vary by insurance company and location, benefits for each lettered plan are standardized by law.
