Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, helps pay some of the out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside Original Medicare. They do not include prescription drug coverage — for that, you will need a separate Medicare Part D plan.
Key Features of Medigap Plans:
Standardized Coverage: Plans are labeled A–N and offer the same basic benefits regardless of the insurer.
Nationwide Use: Use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.
Predictable Costs: Reduce your exposure to unexpected medical bills.
Guaranteed Renewable: Your plan can’t be canceled as long as you pay your premium.
Important: You must have both Medicare Part A and Part B to buy a Medigap policy. You cannot have a Medigap policy and a Medicare Advantage Plan at the same time.
When Can You Enroll?
Medigap Open Enrollment Period: A 6-month period starting the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this time, you can buy any Medigap policy available in your state without medical underwriting.
After Open Enrollment: You may be subject to medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right.
